Title: The Hat House Genre: Children’s Book Print Length: 30 pages Publisher: Not Listed Publication Date: February 16, 2018 Author: Tina Wijesiri Illustrator: Tina Wijesiri SYNOPSIS: A short tale of three little hedgehogs and their quest for the perfect house. Written and illustrated by Tina Wijesiri with special thanks to my editor, Debbie Manber Kupfer. EXTERIOR / COVER DESIGN: The cover illustration looks unique and appears to be hand drawn. The hand-drawn image really stands out, and it’s relatable to young readers because it is similar to their style of art. There is an image of three hedgehogs that are holding on to a hat, which seems to be blowing away. The title of the book leaves no room to wonder what the book is about because the image tells you exactly what you want to know.
ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations in this book have the same unique style as the cover. The illustrator used a lot of character detail and could have told the story just by using the images. This shows the creativity that went into creating each illustration. REVIEW: The Hat House is an adorable story that is perfect for curious children. The story is centered on three hedgehogs that find shelter within a big, black hat. During the journey of securing their newly found shelter, the hedgehogs have to protect it from the elements and other animals around them. The illustrations were beautiful and easily keep readers engaged. The only thing lacking in this story would have been more obstacles on the journey. The hedgehogs had to find quick shelter under a mushroom to shield themselves from the rain, and the next item they found was the hat. If the author/illustrator had thrown in a couple more potential items of shelter that the hedgehogs encountered before finding the hat, it would have elevated the story a bit more. Overall, The Hat House is a wonderful concept and story.
